About Student Voyage

We believe in the power of international experience.

Student Voyage was founded by Jorge Giroud and Eric Shamas in 2004 with the intention of helping young students learn a very simple fact: The world you experience is different than the world people tell you about.  Jorge and Eric experienced this revelation when they first traveled abroad together as students in 1994.  Now they are dedicated to providing young people with first-hand experience living, studying and volunteering abroad.

The Student Voyage mission:

The Student Voyage mission is to provide students with life-changing cultural experiences and community service projects abroad.

Our mission is simple, but its impact is far reaching.  We understand that the results of vigorously pursuing this goal go far beyond our reach as individuals.  The open-minded students that venture with Student Voyage to new places are invariably rewarded with a greater consciousness of their place among the myriad cultures and languages of our neighbors.  It is this awareness that empowers students to succeed as young adults and be agents of positive change.

One Language is not Enough

We also believe that language is perhaps the most important tool for our mission.  We provide our students with the best language instruction so they can quickly become bilingual and communicate with the people around them.  The ability to use another language opens a door to the hearts and minds of other people without which an exchange of ideas would be nearly impossible.

Active Immersion

Naturally, communication requires contact.  It is our belief that a student’s cultural experience is incomplete without first hand experience living as the locals do.  Cultures are, after all, made up of people.  The relationships students make with their new friends and host families help them realize that on a basic level we all have more in common than we may realize.  These new friendships are often the difference between a simple summer abroad and a life-changing experience.

Building Figurative and Literal Bridges

Finally, we believe that community service helps students dissolve barriers that distance them from other people.  Students have a rare opportunity to see the raw beauty of a culture by working with the locals to improve the quality of life in the community.

We are also strong believers that international experience should be fun!  There is no reason why students should not have the time of their lives while exploring new places and cultures.  We love what we do and hope every moment is an unforgettable moment for our students.
